How do I create a secure password?
Passwords should be at least eight characters long and consist of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and special characters, says the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). It recommends that you formulate a sentence that is personal to you (for example, ``I prefer to eat pizza with four ingredients and extra cheese``). A combination of letters and numbers can then be derived from this (in this case: ``IpePw4I+eC``).
In Zoho Vault, you can either create your own passwords or have them generated automatically for you.
How secure are my passwords in Zoho Vault?
Zoho Vault secures your passwords using AES-256 encryption. You also log in to Zoho Vault using two-factor authentication (2FA for short). So, you need two factors or “steps” to log into the password manager. In the first step, enter your master password or a passphrase. And in the second step, you either have a one-time code sent to you via SMS or you work with an authorization app that confirms your identity during the login process - for example with a touch or face ID. The master password should be as complex and long as possible - as described above. Stiftung Warentest recommends at least 20 characters.
What happens if I forget my master password?
Then you can no longer log into Zoho Vault and will need to create a new password. Any data that you had stored in Zoho Vault will be deleted. So, you would have to start over again from the beginning. However, you will receive an encrypted HTML file via mail that contains your old data. If you manage to find or remember your old password at a later date, you can decrypt the HTML file and access your old data.
